Company History

Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company and our affiliates are a group of insurance and financial service companies in the United States. Our headquarters are in Columbus, Ohio. Our story began on December 17, 1925, when the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation incorporated the Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company. These two companies were located in Columbus. According to the law in Ohio at the time, 100 people had to promise to become policyholders for the business to continue. The early agents in the company were able to recruit 1,000 policyholders, allowing Farm Bureau Mutual to begin operations on April 12, 1926.

The company began by offering car insurance to their policyholders. Only Ohio farmers could purchase these early policies. Soon, Farm Bureau Mutual expanded their coverage to include West Virginia farmers. This was so successful that they continued to increase their coverage, including North Carolina, Vermont, Delaware, and Maryland in their coverage. By 1931, residents of small towns who were not farmers were included in the company. By 1934, city residents could purchase Farm Bureau Mutual policies.

The year 1934 also brought another change to the company. It was this year that the insurance provider started offering fire protection. Soon, Farm Bureau Mutual was able to purchase a struggling fire insurance company, prompting a move to a larger office. In 1936 the company's headquarters relocated to the 246 Building at 246 North High Street in Columbus. By the year 1942, the company was operating in 12 states as well as Washington, D.C. Soon, the 246 building was not large enough. Regional offices were opened beginning in 1951.

As the company grew, a name change was in order. In 1955, Farm Bureau Mutual became Nationwide Insurance, the name the company is known by today. Nationwide continued to expand over the next 10 years, including Oregon in its coverage. This took Nationwide truly national, and the expansion continued into 19 other states. By the end of 1965, Nationwide covered 32 states plus the District of Columbia.

In the 1970s the 246 Building was no longer sufficient. A new skyscraper was developed to become the company's headquarters. It was ready in 1978, and Nationwide moved operations to One Nationwide Plaza on the corner of Nationwide Boulevard and North High Street in the northern section of Columbus.

This growth continued, as did the growth of Columbus as a whole. By 1997, Columbus was the 15th largest city in the nation. It was also the largest city that did not have a professional sports team. When voters failed to approve the tax levy necessary to move the Hartford Whalers to Columbus, Nationwide decided that it was time to act. The company built an arena next to its One Nationwide Plaza location and worked to bring a National Hockey League team to Columbus. In late 2000, the Columbus Blue Jackets came to Nationwide Arena, the centerpiece of the Arena district, which links downtown Columbus to The Short North neighborhoods with a series of entertainment, dining, and lodging venues.

While none of us wants to think about the fact that we will die one day, planning for this event is essential. Life insurance protects those you leave behind from the costs of your death. We offer several life insurance products for you to consider. Any time you purchase life insurance, you need to realize that the policy's value is only as good as the claims paying ability of the company issuing the insurance. Remember that Nationwide is one of the largest insurance companies in the world. Our life insurance products are issued by either Nationwide Life Insurance Company or Nationwide Life and Annuity Insurance Company, which are based out of Columbus Ohio.

Nationwide Life Insurance had to pay $650,000 to customers as restitution for poor sales practices in May of 2005. This came as a result of a settlement between the company and Massachusetts Attorney General Tom Reilly. The allegations said that Nationwide Life use deceptive sales practices to sell customers policies they could not really afford. Those who fit the qualifications of Reilly's investigation were to be paid directly by Nationwide. The affected policies were sold between 1997 and 2001, but the customers did not realize they had been given faulty information until several years later when the products did not live up to the original information that had been provided. Nationwide has worked hard to rectify this situation and avoid any situation where it would happen again.

Nationwide is NOT on your side!! They are happy to collect your money but when you have an accident they will NOT help you instead they let the other company decide who is at fault because it is too expensive for them to go to court and fight for you even when it is the other persons fault they want

the company needs to start helping the economy & their policyholders instead of worrying if they can pay their top CEO\'s exuberant salaries. The installment fees, service charges & late pays are hurting the people who already are struggling to pay their insurance. Believe Me - I\'m a very concern

Expensive plus poor customer service and claims experience. Nationwide seems to be worried about how much money they can save instead of helping the customer.
